Burst Pipe Floods Target in Pasadena

A flood at a Target store early Friday caused an estimated $35,000 in damage, officials said.

Pasadena fire responded to an alarm in the store at 5:41 a.m., caused by a burst pipe in the store's receiving area on the second floor.

An employee hit the sprinkler pipe while conducting restock, causing water to flow down to the first floor and the refrigeration room, officials said.

The fire department, on scene for two hours, shut off the sprinkler supply system and removed the sprinkler pipe to prevent further damage.

The store, at 777 E. Colorado Blvd., was able to open for business at 8 a.m., Manager Reanne Butts said.

Burst Pipe Floods Community Center in Pocatello

Teachers and faculty of the Pocatello Community Charter School in Pocatello walked into to what nearly amounted to an indoor pool when they found the entire western wing of the school flooded with water.

In all six classrooms, a library and one office were flooded when a water pipe leading to one of the classroom drinking fountains burst.

“We had to cancel school for the day and bring 21st Century Remodeling in to do the cleanup,” PCCS Dean Dr. Martha Martin said. “We’re leaving it up to them to decide if anyone else needs to be called to fix the problem.”

Idaho Fire and Flood Restoration is also working to clean up the water.

The school administration waited until just before 8 a.m. Monday to make the decision to cancel classes on account of the flooded rooms.

“The parents and staff worked really well with the new emergency school closure,” Martin said. “We’ve got a new system that sends out text messages and phone calls to alert the parents of the situation and it worked really well for us today.”

The extent of the damage is not yet known, but there was standing water in all eight rooms as well as the hallway.

Fire Damages Home and Boat in Iowa

The state fire marshal is investigating an early-morning boat and house fire in Maquoketa.
Maquoketa firefighters were called to the Kevin Owen home, 315 S. 5th St., to a report of a boat next to the house on fire at 1:44 a.m. Monday. A backyard neighbor said she saw the fire from her home. When firefighters arrived, the boat was in flames, and the fire had moved to the home’s siding, eaves and attic, Fire Chief Mark Beck said.
Owen was not home at the time of the fire.
Maquoketa police called the fire marshal. Owen said he had recently purchased the boat and had not had it in the water or even taken the cover off. The fire marshal was investigating the scene Monday morning with police officers.
Beck said firefighters had to cut holes in the roof of the home to vent the attic. He said they moved contents out of one bedroom and put down salvage covers. But he said there’s damage from the holes in the ceiling.
Firefighters also pulled a Harley Davidson motorcycle out of the garage. They spent about two hours at the home putting out hot spots.

Fire Damages Home in Fort Wayne

A fire Friday afternoon heavily damaged a Park Avenue home, Fort Wayne firefighters said. No one was injured.

Firefighters were called to 1308 Park Ave. about 1:15 p.m. on a report of a house fire, and found heavy smoke coming from the rear of the home, the Fort Wayne Fire Department said in a statement.

Crews found high heat and smoking coming from the kitchen and laundry room of the two-story home, the statement said.

It said the home's occupant told firefighters he had been outside and saw smoke coming from the rear of the home.

Bathroom Pipe Bursts, Floods Library

Disaster was averted in Phillips Memorial Library on the morning of Easter Sunday when a burst pipe was discovered in the first floor bathroom. A high-pressure water pipe leading to the urinal in the men’s bathroom had sprung a leak around 1 a.m., sending gallons of water into the library.

The leak was discovered a few hours later and the water in the library was shut off to stop the flow of water. By the time the leak was stopped, the water had soaked the carpet of the first floor, reaching almost to the front doors. The water had also made its way down the stairs to the basement, but the raised floor of the Tech Hub prevented much flooding there.

Workers from the Physical Plant were called in to remove furniture from the flooded areas to limit the damage from the standing water. The school also hired Polygon, a water removal company from Andover, Mass., to come in and direct the drying process. The school’s goal was to have the library usable by the time classes started on Tuesday and fully dry by Accepted Students’ Day on Saturday.

Fire Damages Apartment Building in Wichita

A discarded cigarette is being blamed for a fire that damaged an apartment building near downtown Wichita Thursday afternoon.

A Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy saw flames on a second-story balcony at Riverpark Plaza, 400 W. Central, just before 1:30 p.m., a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said. The fire burned for half an hour before firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze.

An investigation determined that the fire started after a tenant on the second floor put a just-extinguished cigarette butt into a plastic water bottle filled with butts, Capt. Stuart Bevis said. The fire caused an estimated $35,000 damage to the structure and contents.

Fire damage was limited to the second-story apartment, Bevis said, but the apartment beneath it sustained some water damage. Both apartments are unlivable at the moment, he said.

No injuries were reported.

Fire Damages home on Whittier Ave

A fire that originated in the basement of a home at 1901 S. Whittier Ave. Tuesday afternoon caused significant damage to the first floor of the home.
The fire occurred at 3:23 p.m. Tuesday. No one was home when the fire erupted.

Joe Serra, a battalion chief with the Springfield Fire Department, said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, it did not appear to be suspicious, he said.

Most of the damage was to the basement and flooring on the first level of the home, Serra said.

Crews remained at the home for about an hour. Serra said it took firefighters extra time to extinguish the blaze because they were not initially aware the only access to the basement was from the outside of the home.

Burst Pipe Floods North Hampton Library

A burst pipe affected by sub-freezing temperatures over the weekend has left about two inches of water on the floor of the public library in North Hampton, N.H.

No books were damaged but carpets were waterlogged and there's been some damage to ceiling tiles.

Town Administrator Steve Fournier tells the Portsmouth Herald the library could stay closed for up to a week.

The damage was discovered by cleaning crews Monday night.

Town Building Inspector Richard Maybe believes the wind entered the building through tiny spaces in the walls and caused the pipe to freeze and burst in the kitchen area of the Atlantic Area building.

Burst Pipe Floods Senate Offices in Annapolis

A rusted pipe burst Monday afternoon in the William S. James Senate Office Building in Annapolis, flooding some rooms on two floors and prompting the Department of General Services to shut the building.

Thirty-five of the state's 47 senators have offices in the building, and staff members were moving equipment out of offices on the third and fourth floors Monday afternoon. The pipe burst on the west side of the fourth floor, where many Republican members have their offices.

Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller said last night that offices on the first and second floors will reopen Tuesday, while the third and fourth floors could remain closed a few more days. He said a contractor has been called in to prevent mold damage. Some senators will be given space in conference rooms to use as temporary office space, Miller said.

Sam Cook, a General Services administrator, said that a 3-inch pipe connected to the building's sprinkler system rusted out and opened. The problem was discovered about 1:30 p.m. Monday. "Most of the damage was just ceiling tiles dropped and the floor is wet," Cook said. He said a restoration company was examining the site Monday evening.

The Georgian-style building, built in 1938, is the older of the two Senate office buildings. Most of it is set aside for individual senators' offices, while the hearing rooms and committee offices are in the Thomas V. Mike Miller Building.

One of the senators whose offices were severely damaged was Baltimore County's Delores Kelley, who said she was sitting at a table holding a meeting when water began to come through the ceiling and tiles began to come down.

"We had water coming out of light fixtures," the veteran Democrat said. Kelley said she injured herself trying to move computers and other equipment out of the way. When the order came to evacuate, there wasn't time to lock up, she said.

Fire Damages Building in Sausalito

A one-alarm fire damaged a downtown building and snarled traffic in Sausalito Sunday.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the 1 p.m. blaze, which began in one of the ventilation units at the Sausalito Waterworks at 102 2nd Street, a three-story complex that houses a laundromat and dry cleaner.

Firefighters from the Southern Marin, Kentfield, Marin County and Mill Valley fire departments evacuated a group of workers who had been conducting repairs on the roof at the time of the blaze, as well as some of the apartment residents. No one was injured during the fire, and occupants were able to return to their homes once the fire was extinguished.

Fire crews were able to contain the fire.
