Ferndale library suffers water damage

Ferndale— A librarian arrived at work Friday morning and discovered water damage in the public library caused by a plumbing failure in the mezzanine-level mechanical room, according to a press release this morning.
The library's book and media collection, children's area, furniture and computers were unharmed, but the Library's Friends store lost several used books.
Library officials say it's too early to tell what caused the plumbing mishap, but a disaster recovery firm arrived Friday at East Nine Mile Road to assess the damage and begin cleanup efforts.
"There was standing water in some areas just puddling up," said Patrick Dengate, board secretary.
Doug Raber, the library's director, said in a statement that a claims investigation will be conducted by insurance companies to determine the cause and cost of remediation.
The 22,000-square-foot library was closed for the holiday on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but is expected to re-open early next week as restoration continues during the weekend.
The library opened last summer after being closed for nearly a year for a $4 million renovation.
"That's what really makes this heartbreaking," Dengate said.
