Fire Damages Home in Cheswold

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fire this morning that heavily damaged a home in the 100 block of Main St. in Cheswold, according to a news release.

The fire was reported shortly after 10 a.m.

Firefighters from the Cheswold Fire Company arrived at the scene to find flames shooting from the first and second floors, Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio said.

There were no reported injuries, as smoke alarms woke up two second-floor residents who were sleeping at the time, and they escaped unharmed, Chionchio said.

Heavy fire damage is estimated at $200,000, he said.

The Red Cross is assisting six adults with emergency supplies and housing.

Burst Pipes Flood Hospital Basements

THE Royal Berkshire Hospital was forced to postpone six appointments today after a burst pipe caused flooding last night.

The radiator pipe - located in the King Edward and West wards waiting rooms on the second floor close to the London Road entrance - flooded shortly after 9pm and water leaked into the Berkshire Cancer Centre and Medical Physics unit.

Both are outpatients departments so no patients were affected at the time, but the flooding caused damage to equipment in the Medical Physics Department - forcing staff to cancel six appointments there.

Crews from Caversham Road, Whitley Wood and Wokingham Road fire stations spent 90 minutes using specialist pumps to clear the area.

Hospital spokeswoman Jo Barrett said: "Staff, including a plumber and electrician, worked through the night to clear the flooded area and to repair the faulty pipe. Specialist staff in this area are currently assessing the situation."

Mold Found in South Carolina Dorm Rooms

The University of South Carolina is working to eliminate a mold infestation from a 73-year-old dorm that forced some students out of their rooms.

Students began noticing mold forming in some Sims dorm rooms two weeks ago, and the school reacted with letters to parents, inspections and testing.

After getting test results, three of the dorm’s 117 rooms required enough cleaning to move six students to new housing, USC spokesman Wes Hickman said. Another nine students with histories of respiratory ailments have chosen to leave Sims, he said.

The school has no plans to move any more of the dorm’s 219 remaining students since cleanup should eliminate the mold, Hickman said. Once cleaned, contaminated rooms could be used again, he said.

But some parents are concerned about the health effects from the mold.

“She was exposed to something that we might not see until much later,” said Lynn McKenzie of Atlanta, whose daughter has been fighting a persistent cough since her first weekend on campus. “It’s not making me comfortable for her to continue living there.”

McKenzie said her daughter never suffered a respiratory ailment before moving into Sims last month. Hickman said the campus health center has not seen a rise in respiratory cases.

Still, McKenzie and Jon Bennett, another parent with a daughter in Sims, want to know if the school has a backup plan to house students.

“If they have to move them into hotel rooms so they can be assured of being safe, the university should do it,” said Bennett of Alpharetta, Ga. “They don’t need to be focusing on, ‘I’m going to get sick.’ They need to focus whether they will pass their next psych test.”

Sims along with the two other dorms that make up the Women’s Quad are slated to undergo a major $27 million renovation this summer. Hickman said the school is not basing repair decisions on the impending makeover.

“The health and safety of the students are the university’s primary concerns,” he said.

Parents and students complained Sims was excessively humid when classes started. Resident assistants recommended students have dehumidifiers.

McKenzie said the dorm smelled musky when she arrived. Jon Bennett’s daughter, Rachel, said her room was so moist that towels did not dry and shoes felt wet. She recently found mold on her clothes in her hamper and will throw them away.

USC offered to pay for dry cleaning and replacing damaged clothing. The school said it reacted quickly to mold complaints with inspections, independent-lab testing and cleaning. Two emails were sent to parents and meetings were held with students.

Kirsten Kennedy, USC’s executive director of university housing, wrote in an email that broken fiberglass pipe insulation in several closets along with “excessive rains” led to higher than normal humidity levels in the dorm. That mixed with the “organic fibers from clothing and other sources” to form the mold, she said.

Kennedy wrote that health officials told her “these molds are considered common allergens in our area of the country and exist in most commercial and residential buildings to some degree.”

Less than 9 percent of the rooms, which would be about 10, required unspecified “additional attention,” Kennedy wrote.

Despite assurances the rooms will be cleaned, some parents and students remain uneasy about Sims.

“Who knows what I’m breathing in,” Rachel Bennett said. “I don’t want to be stuck with moldy room all year.”

Fire Damages Family's Peekskill Home

A reported electrical fire broke out early this morning, forcing a family of seven, including a 2-year-old girl, to evacuate their home.

No one was injured in the 2:26 a.m. blaze at 1213 Constant Ave., but it destroyed an upstairs bedroom. Peekskill Fire Chief Lenny Varella Jr. said the fire’s cause was electrical and accidental. Firefighters did not determine exactly how it started. Peekskill and Lake Mohegan firefighters battled the blaze.

Betty McGougain, 58, told The Journal News/LoHud.com that her 20-year-old son Yaquba was playing video games in his bedroom when the fire broke out.

Everyone else was sleeping, she said, including her 21-year-old daughter, Sara, and 2-year-old granddaughter, Iyanna Roman. They were in the other upstairs bedroom.

Her son rushed downstairs and woke her and her 62-year-old husband James up and told them to get out.

"Ma, Dad, get up there's a fire," she recalls Yaquba saying. "I can't get it out. I can't get it out."

Betty McGougain hurried to the dining room and called 911. Everyone evacuated safely from the home where they've lived for seven years, including her 16-year-old identical twin sons, Ishmail and Esaa, who were in the other downstairs bedroom.

The family has a small fire extinguisher, she said, but no one could figure out how to use it. Firefighters allowed the family back inside this morning and at least two family members slept on couches in the living room.

About 7:45 a.m., water continued to drip from the ceiling onto a tarp firefighters put on Betty McGougain’s bed. Her bedroom is below her son’s. She fears his Peekskill High School diploma that he just earned may have been lost.

"It could have been worse," she said. "Thank God we all got out and are safe."

Burst Pipe Floods Spa

It was 6:45 A.M. on Sept. 8th, said Meadows Spa owner Laura Garbatow, when employee Dawn Morace found that approximately 150,000 gallons of water had flooded their establishment from burst pipes outside. “I opened up that morning, and there were two big pipes with water not just flowing but gushing in,” Morace said.

“Flooring, equipment, everything was ruined,” said Garbatow. “It wasn’t just cosmetic damage.” She could not provide the Chronicle with an estimate of the cost of the damage, however. “We’re still dealing with insurance, so I don’t want to quote,” she added.

The water also flooded the nearby AMC Loews Fresh Meadows 7 movie theater.

The gym-spa establishment’s following, however, has managed to stay in high spirits. Garbatow credits her members with a great deal of acceptance, energy and support during the business’ crisis. The ruined facilities have forced the spa to move its classes and exercises outside but, Garbatow says, “the members are excited to work outside. We even do Zumba outside.”

Others, however, give Garbatow the credit for the spa-goers’ enthusiasm and energy. “She’s an extraordinary woman,” said Morace. “It was the most devastating thing she’s ever seen.”

Garbatow said that she was terrified that she would be forced to shut down at first, but the repairs have been going unexpectedly well. Some of the club’s facilities are already functional. Garbatow credits her landlord with the speedy repairs, as well as her maintenance and security staff.

Fire Causes $200,000 in Damage to Apartment Building

Investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire that caused an estimated $200,000 in damage to a four-apartment building this morning in Springfield.

The blaze at Brentwood Estates at 317 30th St. was reported just after 10 a.m. The fire began on the ground floor of an apartment, and spread to the building’s common attic area, Battalion Chief Dana Burwell said.

Two apartments sustained heavy damage, but firefighters stopped the fire before flames crept into the building’s other two apartments, Burwell said.

One firefighter sustained a “minor” injury when a television set fell onto his ankle while he fought the blaze, Burwell said.

Fire Damages Transition Home in Salt Lake

A three-alarm structure fire downtown caused extensive damage to an intended transition home for homeless men Sunday morning.

The fire at 556 S. 500 East broke out around 7:30 a.m., Salt Lake City Fire Deputy Chief Dan Walker said. Firefighters arrived within minutes and found heavy fire and smoke coming from the roof of the building.

The home was vacant when the blaze started.

Michelle Templin, director of community engagement for Volunteers of America Utah, said the organization bought the home last winter and was completing the permit process to get the home remodeled. It was to house as many as 14 homeless men between the ages of 18 and 24.

Templin said the organization hopes to have the project completed by December. It would have been the second transition home created by the group, as there is one for women nearby.

"We were really excited to have one for men, and we still will," she said. "It will just take us longer than we had hoped. It's really sad, but we're really happy that no one was in the house."

Walker said crews arriving to battle the blaze confirmed there were no victims in a search of the home. No firefighters were injured fighting the fire.

Firefighters were able to keep the blaze to one building and had it under control within an hour, Walker said.

Neighbor Sean Bennett said his girlfriend woke him up and alerted him to the fire. He said alarms also alerted everyone.

"I could feel the heat coming through the windows. … It was definitely intense heat," he said.

Bennett said he had heard of the plans for the building and was excited for the development in the area. Still, he was glad no one was injured in the blaze.

"Luckily it was vacant and no one got hurt," he said. "A lot of people live in this area. I'm just happy everybody is safe. The building is a loss, but we're all safe and life's good."

Fire Damages Old Church

Fire damaged a former city church building this morning.

The blaze was reported shortly after 8 a.m. on Ora Street at the former Ora Street Church of God, off South French Broad Avenue.

No one was injured, Asheville Fire Department Battalion Chief Jimmy Cowan said at the scene.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, which started in the back of the small church. “It was out within five minutes after we got here,” Cowan said.

Jeff Tracz, an investigator with the Asheville-Buncombe Arson Task Force, said a dropped cigarette that fell on a couch caused the blaze.

A man who was in the building doing renovation work had left a lit cigarette near the couch, and it fell onto a cushion, Tracz said.

No charges will be filed, he said.

The building suffered some damage, but Tracz could not provide a monetary estimate.

The building was no longer being used as a church.

Fire Damages Home in Kennewick

A fire at a Kennewick double-wide trailer Monday may have been started by an electrical problem, but investigators say more information is needed until they determine a cause.

Kennewick Fire Marshal Mark Yaden also told the Herald they're considering any possibility -- from arson to accidental. The Kennewick Police Department's arson detective was called out to help.

"We did clean up the scene and got it reconstructed. We can see where the fire started in the bedroom," Yaden said. "There's some electrical wiring in there that didn't look too bad but is damaged from the fire."

Electricians are being called in to help trace the circuits for investigators, he said. Yaden said they don't know if the damage seen in the wiring caused the fire or if it was damaged by the fire.

Smoke billowed out of the home at 2302 N. Utah St., where the fire was reported just before 9 a.m.

Two adults and three children who were home at the time escaped without injuries, said Kennewick Deputy Fire Chief Marvin Leonard.

One resident went to get into the shower, walked by a back bedroom and noticed smoke as the person went by the door, he said.

"They opened the door, and flames and smoke came out. They shut the door and called 911 and evacuated the residence," he said. "The house was full of a family just getting up and getting on with their day."

Flames were shooting out of the roof of the home when the first engine from the Richland Fire Department arrived. A next-door neighbor said he heard the sirens, went outside and saw the flames over the large camper he had parked in the driveway.

Another neighbor told the Herald that responding firefighters did an incredible job getting the fire out so quickly.

The Richland fire crew had the flames knocked down within three minutes of announcing on the radio that they were going into the home, Leonard said.

Firefighters knew the fire was in the corner back bedroom, so they went straight to the room and extinguished it, he said. It took about another 15 minutes to put out all the major hot spots, he said.

By 10:15 a.m., firefighters still were cutting holes into the roof to ensure the fire was out.

An estimated 21 firefighters from Kennewick and Richland fire departments and Benton Fire District 1 responded. There were no injuries.

Fire Damages Historic Restaurant in Vancouver

A two-alarm fire damaged a landmark Vancouver waterfront restaurant just after lunch hour today.

Firefighters were called to Who Song & Larry's Cantina at 111 S.E. Columbia Way about 1:15 p.m. after a report of smoke coming from the attic space. They arrived to find light smoke coming from the building, but the fire was spreading even as they parked their trucks.

Diners and staff successfully evacuated the restaurant. Within a few minutes flames erupted from one end of the roof, and a second alarm was called. In all, most of the city's on-duty firefighters were called to the scene, along with units from Clark County Fire District 6 and the Portland Fire Bureau. Portland also sent the fire boat Eldon Trinity in case the blaze needs to be attacked from the river side, but it was dismissed without using its water cannons.

By 1:45 p.m. firefighters gained the upper hand and prevented the flames from spreading, according to emergency radio traffic monitored at The Columbian.

The landmark Mexican restaurant has occupied a spot on the north bank of the Columbia River, just east of the Interstate 5 Bridge, for nearly 30 years, and predates Waterfront Park. It is a unit of RM Opco, which since March 12 is the owner of the El Torito and Chevy's Fresh Mex chains, among other brands.

Although the firefighters are still on the scene, it seems likely that the restaurant will have to be closed for significant repairs. The interior has suffered smoke and water damage, and some of the fire sprinklers triggered, according to radio traffic.

Court Running Again Following Mold Damage

The Union Gap Municipal Court is back open Monday after closing almost three weeks ago because of toxic black mold at city hall.

Judge Bob Northcott says they're 500-600 cases behind.

During the morning session Monday, they saw about 60 people come through municipal court. On average they see only about 50 for the whole day.

The judge even postponed the lunch break to make sure they got through all the cases from the morning.

The move cost the city about $60,000 in construction costs, but Northcott says the Yakima County Fire District 11 building on Washington Avenue is working out great.

"We've had some police officers in today, just to see how things were working. Everybody feels like it's a very efficient operation," said Judge Northcott.

He says it will probably take them a few months to completely catch up.

As far as the ongoing mold problem and what's going to happen to city hall, Mayor Jim Lemon said that the council will discuss another option to buy Yakima County's Restitution Center in Union Gap.

Creek Floods Basement in Patchinsville

Not again. This was the sentiment of Wayland resident Sheila Palmer and town officials as her basement flooded for the second time since April 2011.

The first time it flooded, she lost everything in her basement and had to replace her furnace and hot water tank on her own dime, having been denied flood insurance.

Palmer wasn’t the only residence that had trouble that year. Steuben County declared a county-wide disaster, and after town officials asked Steuben County Soil and Water Conservation District to clean out the brush and debris clogging Little Mill Creek, which runs just feet from her house on County Road 90, Jeff Parker, conservation district manager, had 35 other stream emergencies to deal with all on his own.

Parker obtained stream emergency permits from Department of Environmental Conservation, and was set to go on Mill Creek before the cutoff date of Sept. 31.

The stream is protected from Sept. 31 to May 15 due to trout spawning.

But when Parker’s equipment broke down, he missed the cutoff date, and had to wait. Wayland wasn’t the only area Parker couldn’t finish, but he said he was able to finish work on more than half of the 35 streams.

When flooding hit Palmer’s residence this time, the damage was worse. Palmer discovered her basement was flooded early Friday morning when she awoke to get a drink of water. When no water was coming out of her faucet, she proceeded to her basement to see why.

The water had arisen about a foot from the rafters of her basement. “My [basement] stairwell was floating,” she said.

Perkinsville Fire personnel arrived on scene soon after they were called a little before 4:30 a.m. NYSEG was called to cut electrical power to her home to prevent a fire.

“It’s got to be taken care of. I can’t do any more,” she said on scene Friday.

Broken Toilet Pipe Floods Courthouse

ALL three floors of a court building were flooded following a water leak.
A crew from Stranton Fire Station rushed to Hartlepool Law Courts, in Victoria Road, where a broken pipe saw three inches of water drench various areas around offices and stairwells.
Firefighters located the source of the leak, a broken pipe in a toilet, and stopped the leak before mopping up the pools of water.
Watch manager Marty Challenor said: “There was quite a substantial amount of water from a broken pipe in the toilet.
“It affected the first, ground and basement floors, with about three inches of water around stairwells and offices.
“We found the source and managed to stop the leak, before undertaking salvage work by mopping up, clearing water and removing equipment.”
Firefighters spent 40 minutes at the scene, before a Hartlepool Borough Council clean-up team was expected to attend.

Burst Pipe Floods Community Center

A burst pipe in a second-floor men’s restroom flooded portions of St. Joseph Community Center today.

The water flowed through the ceiling and into the lobby outside the U.S. Veterans Affairs clinic in the center.

Marc Mapel, president of Energy Management Specialists, said the water to the building had to be shut off for a time while the leak was repaired.

Cleanup of the damaged ceiling tiles was already underway on the first floor, but there are still inches of standing water in parts of the building, including the Gould Auditorium.

The water damage comes at a time when the future of St. Joe’s is at a crossroads. Lorain city and Lorain County officials are trying to convince the state to support a deal to help keep the cash-strapped center operating.

Others, primarily county Commissioner Tom Williams, have questioned the wisdom of further investment in the aging former hospital.

Fire Damages Day Care in Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach firefighters were called to the scene of a blaze at a daycare on Yaupon Drive after an emergency call was made to dispatchers.

According to fire officials, the call came in at 6:36 a.m. Monday morning. Six Myrtle Beach Fire units were sent to Pat-A-Cake Daycare to extinguish the flames.

Firefighters say the building was 25 percent involved when they arrived, but the fire was contained within approximately 30 minutes.

There is extensive damage to the building but no one was hurt during the incident and firefighters say no one was in the building when crews responded.

Flames was found on the first floor of the nursery area when Myrtle Beach Fire arrived on scene. No mutual aid was needed and fire crews are now investigating how the blaze started.

Burst Pipe Floods Target in Pasadena

A flood at a Target store early Friday caused an estimated $35,000 in damage, officials said.

Pasadena fire responded to an alarm in the store at 5:41 a.m., caused by a burst pipe in the store's receiving area on the second floor.

An employee hit the sprinkler pipe while conducting restock, causing water to flow down to the first floor and the refrigeration room, officials said.

The fire department, on scene for two hours, shut off the sprinkler supply system and removed the sprinkler pipe to prevent further damage.

The store, at 777 E. Colorado Blvd., was able to open for business at 8 a.m., Manager Reanne Butts said.

Burst Pipe Floods Community Center in Pocatello

Teachers and faculty of the Pocatello Community Charter School in Pocatello walked into to what nearly amounted to an indoor pool when they found the entire western wing of the school flooded with water.

In all six classrooms, a library and one office were flooded when a water pipe leading to one of the classroom drinking fountains burst.

“We had to cancel school for the day and bring 21st Century Remodeling in to do the cleanup,” PCCS Dean Dr. Martha Martin said. “We’re leaving it up to them to decide if anyone else needs to be called to fix the problem.”

Idaho Fire and Flood Restoration is also working to clean up the water.

The school administration waited until just before 8 a.m. Monday to make the decision to cancel classes on account of the flooded rooms.

“The parents and staff worked really well with the new emergency school closure,” Martin said. “We’ve got a new system that sends out text messages and phone calls to alert the parents of the situation and it worked really well for us today.”

The extent of the damage is not yet known, but there was standing water in all eight rooms as well as the hallway.

Fire Damages Home and Boat in Iowa

The state fire marshal is investigating an early-morning boat and house fire in Maquoketa.
Maquoketa firefighters were called to the Kevin Owen home, 315 S. 5th St., to a report of a boat next to the house on fire at 1:44 a.m. Monday. A backyard neighbor said she saw the fire from her home. When firefighters arrived, the boat was in flames, and the fire had moved to the home’s siding, eaves and attic, Fire Chief Mark Beck said.
Owen was not home at the time of the fire.
Maquoketa police called the fire marshal. Owen said he had recently purchased the boat and had not had it in the water or even taken the cover off. The fire marshal was investigating the scene Monday morning with police officers.
Beck said firefighters had to cut holes in the roof of the home to vent the attic. He said they moved contents out of one bedroom and put down salvage covers. But he said there’s damage from the holes in the ceiling.
Firefighters also pulled a Harley Davidson motorcycle out of the garage. They spent about two hours at the home putting out hot spots.

Fire Damages Home in Fort Wayne

A fire Friday afternoon heavily damaged a Park Avenue home, Fort Wayne firefighters said. No one was injured.

Firefighters were called to 1308 Park Ave. about 1:15 p.m. on a report of a house fire, and found heavy smoke coming from the rear of the home, the Fort Wayne Fire Department said in a statement.

Crews found high heat and smoking coming from the kitchen and laundry room of the two-story home, the statement said.

It said the home's occupant told firefighters he had been outside and saw smoke coming from the rear of the home.

The fire caused heavy smoke and fire damage, and moderate water damage, the statement said. It was controlled within about 20 minutes, and remains under investigation.

Bathroom Pipe Bursts, Floods Library

Disaster was averted in Phillips Memorial Library on the morning of Easter Sunday when a burst pipe was discovered in the first floor bathroom. A high-pressure water pipe leading to the urinal in the men’s bathroom had sprung a leak around 1 a.m., sending gallons of water into the library.

The leak was discovered a few hours later and the water in the library was shut off to stop the flow of water. By the time the leak was stopped, the water had soaked the carpet of the first floor, reaching almost to the front doors. The water had also made its way down the stairs to the basement, but the raised floor of the Tech Hub prevented much flooding there.

Workers from the Physical Plant were called in to remove furniture from the flooded areas to limit the damage from the standing water. The school also hired Polygon, a water removal company from Andover, Mass., to come in and direct the drying process. The school’s goal was to have the library usable by the time classes started on Tuesday and fully dry by Accepted Students’ Day on Saturday.

Fire Damages Apartment Building in Wichita

A discarded cigarette is being blamed for a fire that damaged an apartment building near downtown Wichita Thursday afternoon.

A Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy saw flames on a second-story balcony at Riverpark Plaza, 400 W. Central, just before 1:30 p.m., a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said. The fire burned for half an hour before firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze.

An investigation determined that the fire started after a tenant on the second floor put a just-extinguished cigarette butt into a plastic water bottle filled with butts, Capt. Stuart Bevis said. The fire caused an estimated $35,000 damage to the structure and contents.

Fire damage was limited to the second-story apartment, Bevis said, but the apartment beneath it sustained some water damage. Both apartments are unlivable at the moment, he said.

No injuries were reported.

Fire Damages home on Whittier Ave

A fire that originated in the basement of a home at 1901 S. Whittier Ave. Tuesday afternoon caused significant damage to the first floor of the home.
The fire occurred at 3:23 p.m. Tuesday. No one was home when the fire erupted.

Joe Serra, a battalion chief with the Springfield Fire Department, said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, it did not appear to be suspicious, he said.

Most of the damage was to the basement and flooring on the first level of the home, Serra said.

Crews remained at the home for about an hour. Serra said it took firefighters extra time to extinguish the blaze because they were not initially aware the only access to the basement was from the outside of the home.

Burst Pipe Floods North Hampton Library

A burst pipe affected by sub-freezing temperatures over the weekend has left about two inches of water on the floor of the public library in North Hampton, N.H.

No books were damaged but carpets were waterlogged and there's been some damage to ceiling tiles.

Town Administrator Steve Fournier tells the Portsmouth Herald the library could stay closed for up to a week.

The damage was discovered by cleaning crews Monday night.

Town Building Inspector Richard Maybe believes the wind entered the building through tiny spaces in the walls and caused the pipe to freeze and burst in the kitchen area of the Atlantic Area building.

Burst Pipe Floods Senate Offices in Annapolis

A rusted pipe burst Monday afternoon in the William S. James Senate Office Building in Annapolis, flooding some rooms on two floors and prompting the Department of General Services to shut the building.

Thirty-five of the state's 47 senators have offices in the building, and staff members were moving equipment out of offices on the third and fourth floors Monday afternoon. The pipe burst on the west side of the fourth floor, where many Republican members have their offices.

Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller said last night that offices on the first and second floors will reopen Tuesday, while the third and fourth floors could remain closed a few more days. He said a contractor has been called in to prevent mold damage. Some senators will be given space in conference rooms to use as temporary office space, Miller said.

Sam Cook, a General Services administrator, said that a 3-inch pipe connected to the building's sprinkler system rusted out and opened. The problem was discovered about 1:30 p.m. Monday. "Most of the damage was just ceiling tiles dropped and the floor is wet," Cook said. He said a restoration company was examining the site Monday evening.

The Georgian-style building, built in 1938, is the older of the two Senate office buildings. Most of it is set aside for individual senators' offices, while the hearing rooms and committee offices are in the Thomas V. Mike Miller Building.

One of the senators whose offices were severely damaged was Baltimore County's Delores Kelley, who said she was sitting at a table holding a meeting when water began to come through the ceiling and tiles began to come down.

"We had water coming out of light fixtures," the veteran Democrat said. Kelley said she injured herself trying to move computers and other equipment out of the way. When the order came to evacuate, there wasn't time to lock up, she said.

Fire Damages Building in Sausalito

A one-alarm fire damaged a downtown building and snarled traffic in Sausalito Sunday.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the 1 p.m. blaze, which began in one of the ventilation units at the Sausalito Waterworks at 102 2nd Street, a three-story complex that houses a laundromat and dry cleaner.

Firefighters from the Southern Marin, Kentfield, Marin County and Mill Valley fire departments evacuated a group of workers who had been conducting repairs on the roof at the time of the blaze, as well as some of the apartment residents. No one was injured during the fire, and occupants were able to return to their homes once the fire was extinguished.

Fire crews were able to contain the fire.

Water Main Break Floods House and Closes Zoo

A water main break in east Abilene Tuesday sent a powerful burst of water that has damaged an Abilene home – and forced closure of the Abilene Zoo temporarily.

The Zoo was closed for over an hour because of low water supplies, according to the city communications manager. The zoo reopened for business when water was restored about 3 p.m.

Zoo officials said the zoo had plenty of water in pools and bowls for the animals but remained closed until repairs could be made.

A house and a pickup beside the house were damaged when the break caused a gusher in northeast Abilene, north of the zoo, on Northway Drive, on the north side of Highway 80.

Homeowners said the house was renovated just last year, but the water break sent a flood through and soaked the carpet. The water spout also blew rocks and debris high into the air, crashing down on a pickup and breaking its windshield.

City crews spent the day patching the section of pipe that burst, leaving 12 homes without water for much of the afternoon.

The city plans on replacing a mile of the pipeline parallel to HWY 80 but it could take up to five years before the project is started.

Burst Pipe Floods Courthouse in Dallas

The Frank Crowley Courts criminal building remains closed Friday after a burst pipe flooded the first floor of the building with several inches of water the day before.
The building is home to several district courts, criminal district courts, county criminal courts, the district attorney's office and the county probation office.
Escalators, elevators and security check-in points remain inoperable, with only essential county personnel on duty Friday. All court business - including trials, jury duty and the district clerk's office - have come to a halt.
County officials hope the building will be open for business on Monday.
This is the second flooding of a downtown Dallas County building in the past two years. In June of 2010, a broken water main flooded the basement of the nearby Dallas county records building with several feet of water. Computer and electrical systems housed in the basement were destroyed, resulting in the district clerk and county clerk's offices remaining closed for over a week.
The flood did not affect the George Allen Civil Courts building, which is operating normally.

Fire Damages Home in Valley

A Tuesday afternoon fire damaged a Clarkson Valley home, endangered two teens and led to a firefighter being treated for heat exhaustion.

Roger Herin, fire marshal with Monarch Fire Protection District, said a call came in at about 5:30 p.m. reporting a fire in the 16400 block of Quiet Creek Court. Two teens in the home at the time discovered the fire, gathered their pets, left and called 911, Herin said.

"Their quick action likely prevented much more extensive damage," he said.

Monarch firefighters, assisted by Metro West Fire Protection District, doused the fire on the outside, but much of the ceilings had to be removed to access and fight the fire in the attic, Herin said. While the fire damage was limited to the siding, deck and attic, the home suffered extensive water damage throughout, as well as the loss of the ceilings.

One firefighter was taken to a local hospital as a precaution, due to apparent heat exhaustion, Herin said. The firefighter has been released.

The fire appears to have started on the exterior deck, however the cause is still under investigation, Herin said.

Fire Damages Dentist Office

A fire at a dentist’s office on Route 32 in Montville was extinguished quickly Sunday evening, but not before destroying equipment and files.

Montville Fire Marshal Ray Occhialini said fire crews responded to the fire at Dr. Michael McKay’s dental office at 1536 Route 32 at 5:04 p.m. They were able to put the fire out in about 10 minutes, but Occhialini said the damage had already been done.

“It spread through the office,” Occhialini said. “It’s totally ruined. He lost I don’t know how many hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment.”

In addition to being McKay’s office, the building is also his home, Occhialini said.

The dentist had gone into the waiting room in the office portion of the building to light the wood stove, and then he went back upstairs to his living quarters, officials said.

“There were combustibles next to the stove,” Occhialini said.

The fire alarms alerted McKay to the fire.

Heavy Rain Floods Home in Jackson

More problems with flooding in the City of Jackson.

Ottis Hawkins called 3 On Your Side for help.

Hawkins says her house has never flooded but with heavy rain Wednesday, she came home to water overflowing inside almost every room.

A pool of water surrounded her house on Pampas Circle off Savannah.

Hawkins tells us she believes there is a problem with the city system and now she is not able to sleep in her bedroom, or use her bathroom and has to decide what she will do next.

"I've been you know calling them telling them about the problem that's outside," Hawkins said. "They came and checked and they still didn't do nothing. And now its backing up in my house, the yard and everything. So I just want them to come out here and do something about it."

WLBT News received emails and calls Wednesday night from other homeowners in South Jackson who say they have similar problems.

Along with the flood water some say sewage is being washed into their homes.

Fire Damages Pallet Business

A Plainwell business was heavily damaged in a fire Wednesday, March 14, that took more than seven hours to put out.

Plainwell Department of Public Safety director Bill Bomar said his officers were called to the Michigan Pallet facility in the city’s industrial park at about 8 p.m.

“A passerby called that there was smoke coming out the roof,” Bomar said. “We got there within a couple of minutes and verified it was on fire.”

Firefighters called in Otsego and Gun Plain Township’s departments to help and they were on scene until about 3:30 a.m.

Because of the nature of the business—manufacturing wooden pallets—the fire was a challenge.

“The amount of flammable product you have on site is immense,” Bomar said.

Michigan Pallet operations manager Ken Englesma said that the fire destroyed the older portion of the building where workers assemble pallets using nail guns. It represents about 20 to 25 percent of the facilities’ output.

The other section constructs pallets in a more mechanized process and seemed to have mostly escaped damage. Englesma said the plant’s office was also destroyed.

He said he wanted to commend the fire departments for not letting the fire spread.

“The fire departments really did a great job,” Englesma said. “It was pretty impressive. They were working hard and they were able to control the fire. They were able to push it back.”

The Plainwell facility employs 22 full-time people.

“We have three other pallet facilities in Michigan,” Englesma said. “We’re going to look at moving the work there.”

Some workers might have to do work at the plants in St. Charles or Clinton.

Only a mechanic was at the plant at the time of the fire and no one was injured.

Bomar said that firefighter also escaped harm. He said that very preliminary indications suggested the fire started in an attic.

“If it started in the attic, usually that would mean it’s electrical,” he said.

Bomar said the Martin Area Fire Department was on standby for backup and sent a crew down to Plainwell to be ready if any other fire service was needed while the three local departments were busy.

The cause of the fire will be investigated further.

Burst Pipes Flood Churches and Homes

A city pipe burst Wednesday morning and created a gushing mess inside of a church, day care and several homes in Fort Worth.

Water rushed into the Community of Hope Luther Church between Highway 287 and Miller Avenue around 4 a.m.

“Nobody was hurt. Nobody is sick. No damage to human beings so that’s a blessing right in itself,” said Johnny Lewis, a church leader.

The church also has a day care that was damaged and will remain closed likely until next week. And at least four homes in the area were flooded.

The city believes the 16-inch water main may have broken because of the recent heavy rains. It was about 35 years old.

By law the Fort Worth isn’t liable for the damage, but hired contractors to clean up as a courtesy.

Kitchen Fire Damages Apartment in Cookeville

A kitchen fire in an apartment late last night was discovered by neighbors in time for firefighters to save the structure and the life of the occupant.

It happened at a two-story apartment building on Virginia Avenue just after 11 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Cookeville Fire Department.

"A man who lives in an apartment there had been cooking something on the stove and fell asleep," said Lt. Shawn Roberson.

Someone living nearby smelled smoke and called the Fire Department.

"When we arrived, the door was locked, but the dead bolt was missing and smoke was coming out of the hole," Roberson said. "So we made entry and began searching for anyone inside."

He said the occupant, a man, had been cooking and fell asleep. He was found sitting in a chair asleep, covered up by a coat.

"We nudged him, trying to wake him, but he didn't wake up until we just picked him up and started carrying him out," Lt. Roberson said.

The man was not seriously injured and was treated at the scene by Putnam Ambulance medics.

Other occupants of the apartment building were evacuated while firefighters put out the kitchen fire. Damage was minimal, Lt. Roberson said.

Courthouse Holding Cells Flooded

HOLDING cells for awaiting trial prisoners at the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court have been flooded, posing a health risk for prisoners and court orderlies.

The cells were flooded on Tuesday afternoon after the court experienced water cuts.

When water was turned back on, the already leaking pipes could not take the pressure and burst.

The room that prisoners use for consulting with their lawyers, the kitchen and the court orderlies’ administration office were all flooded.

All are on the ground floor of the court house.

Court was temporarily adjourned on Wednesday as cleaners mopped up, while prisoners were held at the Mdantsane police station. All trials were postponed.

When the Daily Dispatch visited the cells yesterday , prisoners were standing in puddles of water, while court orderlies searched for cells not as badly flooded to place more awaiting trial prisoners appearing in court.

Warrant Officer Zoyisile Mnyanda, who is in charge of the court orderlies, said the ground floor of the court had been flooding for the past five years with little action from court management.

He said that as a result court orderlies and prisoners had to contend with mosquitoes breeding inside the cells and office.

The ground floor was also very cold, he said.

“These water pipes leak because they are old and need to be changed,” he said.

Large Fire Damages Apartment Building in Minneapolis

A massive fire gutted a south Minneapolis apartment building early Friday, obliterating the roof of the three-story 32-unit brick structure and forcing dozens of residents from their apartments.

No serious injuries were reported, though one resident called 911 reporting being trapped in a bathroom. Firefighters found and rescued the person, Assistant Fire Chief Cherie Penn said.

Resident Jenifer Berndt said she awoke at 2 a.m. to the sound of blaring alarms in her ground-level apartment but wasn't sure at first if the danger was real. It wasn't until she heard an exterior door slamming shut over and over as people evacuated that she and her daughter left the building, then raced back in to save their cats Bacchus and Dumpins.

"There was smoke coming out of the ceiling," said Leah Berndt, Jenifer's daughter. "There was smoke down the hallway. It was big. It was black."

Reported at 2:06 a.m., the fire at the St. George Apartments at 137 E. 17th St. started in the basement, eventually growing to three alarms, according to Penn. The cause is not yet determined.

As the morning rush hour got underway, smoke drifted down onto Interstate 94. The building in the Stevens Square neighborhood overlooks the freeway and sits just across it from Minneapolis Fire Station #6.

"The fire spread horizontally and vertically -- the first, second and third floors, and then through the roof," Penn said. "The damage extends the entire length of the building. I certainly don't foresee anyone getting back in any time soon."

As about 45 firefighters fought the blaze. They later confirmed that all residents made it out safely. One fire fighter suffered a minor injury, but remained on the scene.

Frozen Pipe Bursts; Floods Shop on Main St

A water pipe froze and burst in an upstairs apartment and sent water pouring into a newly remodeled Main Street shop Tuesday morning.

A passerby noticed water pouring out of the doorway of the Sagegrass Gallery at 156 Main St. and informed police at about 5:40 a.m., according to reports. Firefighters arrived quickly and gained entry to a vacant apartment above the gallery while the water main was shut off, Fire Chief Dave Rand said.

A pipe near the front window of the apartment, which juts out over the sidewalk, had burst, Chief Rand said, sending water all over the floor of the apartment and down the walls and into the gallery below.

The apartment was heated, Chief Rand said. He suspected that cold air had infiltrated the space around the pipe and caused the freeze. The same pipe froze once before, several years ago, he said.

Gallery owner Sue Stanley moved the business from Bayside Landing to the Main Street location this winter and plans to open again in the spring. She was devastated when she first walked into her shop Tuesday morning, she said.

“We had just got the painting completed. Literally, Friday it was done,” she said. “The biggest concern at this point is how the insurance is going to handle all this.”

Burst Pipe Floods Shops at Mill

FLOOD damage to a mill shopping complex could run into six figures, its has been revealed.

But the owners of Ena Mill, in Atherton, are resolving to reopen to the public in less than 10 days after the flood wiped out the entire ground floor and large areas of the first floor.

The flood is believed to have started between Sunday evening and Monday morning. The ground floor was the most seriously hit, with water as deep as three inches in some places.

Simon Yates, from Ena Mill, said: “It’s devastating. We’re just taking stock of it all at the moment.

“It’s one of those situations that nothing can prepare you for. It couldn’t have come at a worse time, just before half-term — it’s an important trading time for us. We’ve been advertising heavily and forecasting a record week of sales.

“We had already turned away 400 people before lunchtime on Monday.”

He added: “All we can think about is getting everything cleaned up and reopen as soon as possible. Our lives are on hold until we do.”

Burst Pipe Floods Children Section of Library

Flooding caused by a broken pipe has closed the children's area of the C.M. Bailey Public Library for at least a week and has temporarily made the upstairs bathroom unusable.

Library Director Richard Fortin said staff on Saturday found a running and overflowing toilet in the Kids Room, which is on the ground floor of the 96-year-old building.

About 500 children a week frequent the room, Fortin said.

A staff member, assisted by a patron, mopped the floor and emptied buckets much of Saturday to try to minimize damage until emergency plumbing could be done, Fortin said.

He said the plumber determined that a rock broke an outside pipe, possibly a result of frost-heaving.

Repairs will require excavation, Fortin said. The lines are old and the same one caused problems last year, he said.

The upstairs bathroom also was damaged by flooding and the floor tiles -- later determined to contain asbestos -- must be replaced. Meantime, he said bathrooms are available at the Town Office, which is within walking distance of the library.

Fortin said downstairs work will include replacing tiles, installing new drywall and painting ceiling tiles.

"The work will need to be done before we can reopen it," Fortin said. He didn't know how long that would take.

Fire Damages Hollywood Recording Studio

Los Angeles Fire Department investigators Tuesday sought the cause of a blaze that damaged a Hollywood studio where greats such as Nat King Cole, Elvis Presley and the Beatles recorded.

The fire at 1041 Production Studios, a roughly 100-by-50-foot building at 1041 N. Orange Drive, was reported about 7 p.m. Monday, and about 70 firefighters had it out in 18 minutes, a fire department spokesman said. No one was hurt.

The firefighters resuscitated a cat found unconscious in the two-story building and saved some clothing used in television commercial shoots.

"The firemen saved all my wardrobe, and it's fabulous because that's all rental," Stacey Anne told NBC4. "They saved the day."

The studio, believed to be one of the oldest of its kind in Hollywood, was used by major labels. Presley reportedly recorded hits such as "Jailhouse Rock" and "All Shook Up" there. The Beach Boys, Sam Cooke and Louis Armstrong also reportedly recorded in the nondescript building with one side facing Santa Monica Boulevard.

Members of the band Dead Day Revolution were at the studio Monday night, preparing for an upcoming concert at Saddle Ranch in Studio City.

"It was really smoky back there," Mike Sandoz of Dead Day Revolution told NBC4. "We're going to have to figure out where we're going to practice before the show."

Part of the roof caved in, and the second floor was extensively damaged. According to a published report, the studio was once known as Radio Recorders and built in 1929 by the Victor Talking Machine Co.

Firefighters have yet to put a dollar figure on the damage.

Burst Pipe Floods Church Again

A MAJOR pipe burst has caused flood damage to a church for the second time in five months.

St Anthony’s Church in Saltney’s High Street was hit after the 12-inch water main burst causing a ‘torrent’ of water to pour on to the road causing parts of the pavement to break up.

Dorothy Dudley-Jones, who has lived on the High Street for 30 years, said water had flooded under her floorboards after seeping in through an air vent.

She said: “It was like a river. It came about an inch from the top of our doorstep. It stopped when they turned the main off. We were putting sandbags out.

“The water has gone under the floorboards in the front room. A joiner is going to have to pull it all up to see what damage has been done.

“When you don’t know when the water is going to stop, it is distressing. Our house is the lowest on the street.”

Other homes were spared similar damage when the main supply was switched off but water came within inches of the front doors of about 10 properties.

Tony Ellis, a member of the church, said: “The church cellar has flooded. It is right the way through. There is quite a lot of damage and a lot of water.

“Services won’t be affected, we will carry on as usual.”

A similar pipe burst in September also badly affected the church.

“The last time it took about two days to pump out all the water,” he added.

Cllr Richard Lloyd, the Mayor of Saltney, said the town council will donate funds to those affected by the flood which he described as a “disaster”.

He said: “There was water bubbling out of the road. There is a lot of damage. I could see masses of water. It was up to the kerb and on the verge of going into people’s houses. This was a major pipe which burst.

“It was like a mini earthquake. It has lifted the ground up, there was a lot of pressure coming through.”

Small Fire Damages Home in Mandeville

An apparent electrical fire caused minor damage to a home north of Mandeville this morning and sent a woman to a hospital due to smoke inhalation, authorities said. The woman's son required treatment at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Nearly 20 personnel from the parish's 4th Fire Protection District responded to the blaze at 209 Hickory St. at 10:12 a.m., according to district chief David Schmelling.

He said the fire originated from an overloaded electrical outlet in the small, one-story wooden house. The blaze caused minor damage to the wall surrounding the outlet, as well as some smoke damage, according to Schmelling.

Karen Lacassagne, who lives in the home, was taken away in an ambulance due to smoke inhalation.

Her son, Bert Brossette, said he believed a candle that had been left burning started the fire. "I woke up and it had caught on fire. I ran outside, got a hose and put out the fire."

"They took my mother away. She wasn't smart enough to get out of the house," Brossette said between coughing fits and puffs on his cigarette.

Schmelling said the blaze was extinguished shortly after firefighters arrived.

A neighbor, Helen Denison, said she came outside to make sure the fire didn't spread to her house.

She said she could smell the smoke, but couldn't see any flames.

"It doesn't seem like a whole lot," Denison said.

Apartment Complex Shuts Down Because of Mold

Dozens of people at a Hopewell apartment complex are furious after they received notices they have to move out.

Hopewell Code Enforcement says living conditions are unsafe at the Prince George Terrace apartments, so it's telling people they need to move by Wednesday.

Tiffany Howard says her health has gotten worse and blames the basement apartments which have sitting water, sewage, and some say even mold inside. She lives right above a condemned unit and says the stench inside has crept up through her apartment creating health problems for her.

"The smell is horrible as soon as you walk through the door," said Howard. "I got asthma and bronchitis since I moved here, so it's bad."

Other neighbors like Leona Bland have the same problem. Her apartment has signs of water damage. She even says the water tastes so bad, she has to drink bottled water. Code enforcement says these conditions are not livable, but many people here say they have nowhere to go.

" I felt like I was going to die -- like I was homeless," said Bland. "I'm homeless. I don't have anywhere to go."

Neighbors say they complained to the property manager, but the only advice they've received is to bleach down the walls. Bland says for the past several years the property conditions have gotten worse.

"It's been a bad six or eight years, because people don't want to fix anything," said Bland. 'Now we are getting put out. The owners are hiding. We don't know want to do."

This isn't the first time police say property owner Steven Whitlow has violated city code. He has a record dating back to 2007. Documents from the Colonial Heights Police Department show he was cited for serious maintenance problems at Colonial Court Apartments - the same place where a fire started from a water heater Monday morning. Some violations include not following fire code, improper wiring, and not keeping vacant property secure - unlocked doors and broken windows. In many cases, raw sewage was exposed through bad piping. We saw many of the same scenarios at Prince George Terrace Apartments.

"We need somebody to come to our aid and give us a place to live and vouchers," Bland added.

Burst Pipe Floods Home

A DREAM holiday turned into a nightmare when a Chatteris woman returned home to find her house flooded.

Sarah Huebler was horrified to discover water pouring through her Clare Street home after she came back from Goa, where she had been holidaying with partner Andy Burley, from Ramsey.

A further leak later sprang up outside the house and was reported in last week’s Citizen, as it had been running for almost three weeks. Sarah and Andy came forward to tell their story after seeing the article.

The leak was discovered after the couple had spent a mammoth nine-and-a-half hours making their way from Heathrow Airport in the snowy conditions that greeted them as they arrived home on February 4.

Andy said: “We had to sleep on the motorway because conditions were so bad. Then we got to Sarah’s house and found a pipe had burst in the loft. It was a mains pipe, so the water kept going. The only things salvageable from the house were a table and four chairs. Everything else was ruined.”

Sarah’s parents had been to the house to turn on the heating just before they were due to land and things had been fine. It’s thought the pipe burst not long after they left, due to the freezing conditions.

Senior Citizens Return Home After Apartment Flooded

Senior citizens have returned to their apartment homes after a water pipe burst and flooded portions of their building.

Fire and rescue crews on Monday night were called to the River Run Senior Apartments on 13900 Ridgewood Drive, near the intersection of Prince William Parkway and Minnieville Road in Woodbridge, and found a broken hot water pipe flooding apartments. The pipe was located on the second floor and its water caused damage to multiple units on the first and second floods, said Prince William fire and rescue spokeswoman Kim Hylander.

No injuries were reported.
