Fire Damages Dentist Office

A fire at a dentist’s office on Route 32 in Montville was extinguished quickly Sunday evening, but not before destroying equipment and files.

Montville Fire Marshal Ray Occhialini said fire crews responded to the fire at Dr. Michael McKay’s dental office at 1536 Route 32 at 5:04 p.m. They were able to put the fire out in about 10 minutes, but Occhialini said the damage had already been done.

“It spread through the office,” Occhialini said. “It’s totally ruined. He lost I don’t know how many hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment.”

In addition to being McKay’s office, the building is also his home, Occhialini said.

The dentist had gone into the waiting room in the office portion of the building to light the wood stove, and then he went back upstairs to his living quarters, officials said.

“There were combustibles next to the stove,” Occhialini said.

The fire alarms alerted McKay to the fire.
