Firefighters responded to a home in the 600 block of Ely Boulevard South around 6:20pm Tuesday to find heavy smoke and fire on the front porch as well as the front room of the house.

Officials said passers-by spotted a fire about 11 p.m. Monday at Marshall's Auto Painting and Collision. About 40 firefighters battled the fire.

Officials said the building contained several cars, as well as auto paint and paint thinner, which added fuel to fire. They estimated the damage could total more than $1 million.

House Fire Causes $100,000 In Damage

BELLEVUE — Damage is estimated at $100,000 in a fire at a Bellevue house on Tuesday, fire officials said.

Flames and smoke were visible from the front of the tri-level home at 2252 Lucerne Drive when firefighters arrived at 12:40 p.m., said Brad Muller, assistant chief of the Bellevue Fire Department.

One man was home when the blaze was discovered in the home's attic. He escaped unhurt.

Muller said a wood-burning stove appears to have sparked the fire. The house sustained fire, smoke and water damage.

Brown County land records show that the property, owned by Wayne F. Svoboda of Bellevue, is valued at $160,400.

Loveall RV's Damaged By Fire

A fire at Loveall RVs early today is estimated to have caused millions of dollars in damage.

The Boone County Fire Protection District responded around 1:40 a.m. to the business at 8877 I-70 Drive N.E., east of Columbia just north of Interstate 70. A motorist passing on the interstate called 911 to report smoke coming across the road.

No injuries were reported, Division Chief Gale Blomenkamp said. Firefighters found the east half of the commercial building — the maintenance area — in flames, and the roof had collapsed.

Because the roof was unstable, firefighters worked from outside the building to stop the fire before entering the office and showroom, Blomenkamp said. They found fire continuing on the second floor and extinguished that from the stairwell.

Much of the business’s financial documentation was saved, said John Wilke, chief investigator. Two fifth-wheel campers were destroyed in the maintenance area, and two popup campers in the showroom sustained heavy smoke damage.

Columbia resident Dale Loveall is the property owner, according to the Boone County Assessor’s Office. He could not be reached for comment.

Crews were continuing to put out hot spots this morning.

Boone County Fire Protection District investigators were working with the state fire marshal’s office to determine the fire’s origin. Because the blaze involved a commercial building, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has been asked to help with the investigation.

Investigators were waiting on the scene this morning for the arrival of construction equipment, Wilke said. The equipment will remove the fallen roof and stabilize the building so investigators can enter. Potentially, it could be days before investigators can enter the structure.

While waiting, investigators were interviewing mechanics to learn what was in the building and where it was located, Wilke said. No suspicious activity has been reported.

Because the wind blew toward the south lot, where campers were located, each camper likely will be inspected for smoke damage, Wilke said.

Garage Fire Causes $450,000 In Damage

SHASTA LAKE – A fire caused about $450,000 in damage Monday night to a Yellow Pine Avenue garage and six open carport-like enclosures containing expensive cars, motorcycles and speedboats, a spokesman for the Shasta Lake Fire Protection District said this morning.

Capt. Roger Moses said it appears that the fire, which broke out around 9:15 p.m., was caused by the improper storage of fireplace ash next to one of the open shelters.

The fire, which was fueled by gas in the shelters, spread to the garage, causing about $100,000 in damage to its exterior, but the fire did not spread to the adjacent home. The fire did burn a small area of vegetation, he said.

Among the expensive vehicles destroyed included a custom Jeep and a vintage Mini-Cooper which, Moses said, was “irreplaceable.”

Also destroyed were three boats, three motorcycles and two dirt bikes, he said, adding that the property was insured .

The fire was declared contained around 9:36 p.m. and was finally extinguished shortly before 1 a.m.

No one was injured in the fire, which was fought by firefighters from Shasta Lake, Redding and Mountain Gate.

Neighbor Don Jacop said he was driving up to his house on Yellow Pine Avenue when he saw flames on the hillside near the house.

Basement Fire Causes $10,000 In Damage

NAPERVILLE — A basement fire caused about $10,000 worth of damage Sunday to a two-story wood-frame house at 1112 Summit Hill.

The Naperville Fire Department responded to a call about 3 a.m. of smoke coming from the basement of the house. When firefighters arrived, smoke was coming from the front door of the single-family residence.

The sole occupant of the house already had gotten out of the home by the time firefighters arrived, authorities said. The fire, which was found in a room in the unfinished basement near the utility area, was extinguished within 10 minutes, the Fire Department said. MADISON, Wis. -- Madison fire officials are trying to determine what caused a fire in a motor home that spread to a nearby building and sheds, causing an estimated $50,000 in damage.

The fire was reported at about 1:20 p.m. Thursday in the 5000 block of Femrite Drive on the city's far East Side.

One of two brothers who are staying in the motor home tried to put it out.

Fire crews arriving at the scene found a large black plume of smoke in the sky and quickly extinguished the fire at the auto-shop auto shop building. Fire crews also extinguished fire to a the motor home and two small sheds.

The Red Cross is assisting the two brothers with temporary housing and clothing.

Christmas Day House Fire Causes Upwards Of $100,000

An assistance fund has been set up for a Fayetteville family who suffered “substantial loss” during a Christmas morning house fire, public safety authorities said.

Fayette County Fire and Emergency Services Capt. Pete Nelms reported significant damages to the structure and contents inside of the residence located at 175 Pleasant Point Way.

County fire units, which received automatic aid from the City of Fayetteville Fire Department, brought the blaze under control at 4:18 a.m., the captain said.

He explained the homeowner had been awakened by the smoke alarm to find the family Christmas tree smoking.

The investigation later determined a spark from the fireplace had landed on the tree. The tree was in close proximity to the fireplace, added Nelms.

“The amount of damage is in excess of $100,000, and will continue to climb,” he said. “Whether it is a total loss is undetermined at this time.”
Members from the law enforcement community said relief efforts are underway to help their fellow colleague, Fayette Sheriff’s Office employee Wyndolyn Moulder, along with her husband Ken, and their two children. One of the children was checked on the scene for possible smoke inhalation.

This was the second major house fire of the holiday season in Fayette County. The first destroyed a Peachtree City home and killed a 37-year-old local man.

Individuals who wish to donate on behalf of the Wyndolyn Moulder family may stop by the Delta Community Credit Union branches in Fayetteville or in Peachtree City and ask for the fund established for them.

Fire Destroys Home; Damage Estimated At $500,000

A two-story Leawood house damaged by an early morning fire today is probably a total loss, fire officials said.

No one was injured in the blaze that was discovered about 2:50 a.m. in the 12000 block of Pawnee Lane. The fire caused an estimated $500,000 in damages, said Battalion Chief Steve Duncan with the Leawood Fire Department.

The couple has six cats, three of which were found inside the house. The whereabouts of the other three cats are unknown.

Police arrived at the house shortly after the fire was reported and pounded on the door to wake up the two residents who were still inside. They awoke to the noise and were able to escape.

By the time firefighters arrived, the fire had spread across the wood shake shingle roof. About 2/3 of the roof was ablaze, Duncan said.

“The fire had an early start,” he said.

While battling the blaze, firefighters sprayed foam on neighboring houses to keep the fire from spreading.

The fire was brought under control about 3:55 a.m. and was reported out about 4:15 a.m., Duncan said.

The residents told fire officials that they had a fire in the fireplace. Fire officials are investigating whether there was a flaw or fire in the chimney or whether embers had escaped out of the chimney onto the roof, Duncan said.

Fire investigators remain on the scene investigating the cause of the blaze.

Fire Causes $50,000 In Damage To Duplex

A fire broke out Monday at a Fulton duplex after oil got too hot on the stove and ignited.

According to the Fulton Fire Department, authorities were called at 5:53 a.m. Monday to 1202B Kathy Street.

“We got there and had a working fire in the kitchen and flames were showing,” Assistant Chief Kevin Coffelt said. “Crews went in and attacked the fire. It did go into the attic some, but the fire was out in about 10 or 15 minutes.”

The fire department used several engines to attack the flames. Twenty-one fire personnel responded to the blaze.

Coffelt said the only occupant in the home was out of the house when crews arrived on the scene. A dog was inside the home, but firefighters were able to rescue it.

Coffelt said there was a smoke detector in the home, but it was not working properly.

“It is very important to have working smoke detectors. Smoke detectors have proven time after time to save lives,” Coffelt said. “It may not have helped in this case, because the resident was already up and going. But had they been sleeping, they might not have been alerted and gotten out.”

Coffelt said he offered the services of Red Cross aid to help Jessie Thompson, the lone resident in the unit, but that he declined.

The fire department estimated the damage at $50,000. The attached duplex had minimal damage and fire damage was contained to the kitchen and attic area, according to Coffelt. Smoke and water damage was present through the rest of the home.

Fulton police assisted with traffic control at the scene, and a Callaway County ambulance was on scene for stand-by.
