Library Sustains Major Water Damage

Butte Library sustains major water damage, closed to public

BUTTE — The Butte Public Library and its collections suffered heavy water damage from a water line break and is expected to be closed for several weeks.
Butte Fire Marshall Jeff Miller says the fire suppression water line likely burst from cold temperatures. Library director Lee Phillips says water poured into the building, flooding some of the rooms with as much of 3 inches of water.
A resident noticed water pouring out of the back of the building at about 11 p.m. Monday. Officials from the city water department and Butte Fire Department shut off the water line's emergency valve.
Portions of the second and first floors and the basement were damaged to by flowing water.
Phillips says the library houses about 70,000 books, but it was too early to determine how many were damaged.
