Fire Causes Extensive Damage to Home

Firefighters from at least six towns rush to the scene of a fire in Raymond.

It started around 6:30 Wednesday morning at a home with two apartments on Shaw Road. Crews arrived to find flames shooting out of the house. They say it started in the back of the building and spread quickly to up into the roof. Everyone made it out safely, and firefighters had it knocked down within 15 minutes thanks to some very hard work. Crews were able to save some of the structure, but the fire caused quite a bit of damage inside.

There are no reports of any injuries. The state fire marshal's office is investigating the cause.

Burst Pipe Threatens to Flood Homes

A major water main ruptured threatening to flood nearby properties in Cambridge last night.

A fire crew from the city was called at 11.16pm after reports that a burst pipe was causing flooding to the road in Ditton Lane.

A second pump was requested from Cambridge station and a third engine from Swaffham.

Crews used a motor pump and suction in order to prevent water from entering nearby properties.

At half past midnight the incident was under control and the mains had been turned off.

Cambridge Water also attended and fire crews had left the scene by 1am.

Mold Caused by Recent Flooding of Hurricane Irene

Thanks to Hurricane Irene, more than 700 students at Newark’s Wilson Avenue School are being forced to kick off the new school year on the road.

Due to mold caused by the recent flooding damage at the school, the school district is planning to transport students on Tuesday to two other school while repairs are made. District officials estimate repairs could take six to nine months.

Students in grades 1 through 3 will go to St. Anthony’s in Belleville, and students in grades 4 through 8 will go to Quitman Street Community School in Newark. Pre-K and kindergarten students will remain at the Wilson Avenue Annex building.

School parents should drop off their children at Wilson Avenue School, where they will be transported to the other locations.

District officials are hoping to not interrupt classes, but because of the transportation to other alternate sites, the school day will begin 15 minutes later and end 15 minutes earlier.

“Student safety is our chief concern,” Newark Superintendent Cami Anderson said in a statement. “Despite the disruption, our dedicated staff has responded quickly and provided an alternative site solution to enable the leadership of Wilson Avenue School to provide a safe environment for teachers to teach and students to learn on the first day of school.”

Two community meetings are scheduled for Tuesday to address parents' concerns: 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Quitman Street Community School, located at 21 Quitman Street in Newark; and 6 to 8 p.m. at East Side High School, located at 238 Van Buren Street.

This relocation marks the second time in less than 18 months that Wilson Avenue School students had to leave the Ironbound building while emergency repairs were made.

In April 2010, the school was closed after high levels of benzene were discovered there. Students were sent to East Side High School, and then to a facility in Harrison. After various improvements were made, the school reopened its doors last September.

Unoccupied Home Damaged by Fire

Fire damaged an unoccupied home on Cedar Street Monday afternoon. The cause is still under investigation.

The Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded to 51 Cedar St. at 3:23 p.m. From the street, smoke could be seen coming out the home's second-floor windows as firefighters prepared to enter the building.

The fire was reported by Cindy Kentile, who lives across the street and heard a fire alarm going off in the house.

"I went around the back of the house, and I could see the smoke coming out the back," she said. "I knocked on the door, opened up the door, and there was probably only a foot of clear air on the bottom. The house was filled completely with smoke."

Kentile said she didn't see any flames, just heavy black smoke coming from the house.

Firefighters placed a smoke ejector in a second-floor window to help remove smoke from the building. The fire caused minimal damage to the kitchen and smoke damage throughout the house.

No one was home at the time the fire started. Franklin County property tax records show the house is owned by Gretchen Niederbuhl. It had recently been on the market, although there is no "for sale" sign there anymore.

The fire department responded with one truck and 25 members, and volunteers were back in service by 4:50 p.m

Synagogue Basement Flooded

About 50 children at Netivot HaTorah Day School’s south location are starting school a day later than expected, following a major flood last week at Toronto’s Shaarei Shomayim Congregation, where the branch is housed.

Students will be bused to the school’s Thornhill branch, starting tomorrow.

As well, Shaarei Shomayim is committed to running all planned High Holiday services, although logistics are yet to be determined, Rabbi Chaim Strauchler, the shul’s spiritual leader, told The CJN.

He said that despite “significant damage” from the Sept. 1 flood, Shaarei Shomayim continued operations over the weekend – using the upstairs sanctuary only.
