Unoccupied Home Damaged by Fire

Fire damaged an unoccupied home on Cedar Street Monday afternoon. The cause is still under investigation.

The Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded to 51 Cedar St. at 3:23 p.m. From the street, smoke could be seen coming out the home's second-floor windows as firefighters prepared to enter the building.

The fire was reported by Cindy Kentile, who lives across the street and heard a fire alarm going off in the house.

"I went around the back of the house, and I could see the smoke coming out the back," she said. "I knocked on the door, opened up the door, and there was probably only a foot of clear air on the bottom. The house was filled completely with smoke."

Kentile said she didn't see any flames, just heavy black smoke coming from the house.

Firefighters placed a smoke ejector in a second-floor window to help remove smoke from the building. The fire caused minimal damage to the kitchen and smoke damage throughout the house.

No one was home at the time the fire started. Franklin County property tax records show the house is owned by Gretchen Niederbuhl. It had recently been on the market, although there is no "for sale" sign there anymore.

The fire department responded with one truck and 25 members, and volunteers were back in service by 4:50 p.m
