Families Share One Bedroom After Basement Floods

Two girls from Bonneville County are making a difference with the support of the local community. They're raising money to help one of their teachers, whose house was damaged by a flood. A remarkable task organized by a 13 and 14 year old.

Flood damage in the Brown family's basement has caused some changes in the household.

“All of us have been in one bedroom,” said Mary Brown. “So, that has been a nightmare.”

Mary Brown and her family have been dealing with this since the spring of 2008 because of delays by the previous contractor.

Bailey Storms and Danielle Hutchings are two students at Rocky Mountain Middle School in Bonneville County, where Brown is a 7th grade math teacher. After the girls read in the local newspaper about their Rocky Mountain Middle School teacher's flooding, they went into action thinking of ways they could help.

“I figured, why not do something for a teacher that works at our school and who is dedicated to us?” said Storms.

The girls have set up a fundraiser at the Barnes and Noble at The Grand Teton Mall in Idaho Falls. The money will assist Austin Crystal, a new contractor who volunteered to help rebuild the Brown's basement. Donations are coming from local businesses that the girls have contacted and community members as well.

“I was surprised that I had such a huge impact on somebody's life that I taught, that they wanted to get everyone involved and help us out,” said Brown.
