This fall, United Way facilitated the completion of repairs and made sure that families received the reimbursements they were eligible for before the holidays. These families wouldn't have been able to afford the repair on their homes had it not been for this assistance.
The funding was granted to United Way through the Rock Island County Health Department in cooperation with the Illinois Disaster Assistance Program (IDAP). The funding was specific to help cover the reasonable costs of unmet needs that families still have as a result of the flood. Funding decisions were made by a committee with representation from several different area nonprofits.
In total, $624,000 was granted to our local community helping 269 people, which included close to 100 families.
Some anonymous comments from people who benefitted included:
"(There was) extreme flooding, (and I) lost everything in (my) bedroom, bathroom and basement. We were displaced from our home for three weeks. (It) took another six weeks to haul and clean everything out. (The flood assistance) replaced unstable stairs, enclosed bathroom….and replaced many items lost. (I am) no longer afraid of (going down my) stairs. (Now, I can) just relax with all of the stressed…relieved."
"My basement which had several items (was) destroyed. Also financially, I (was impacted). (There are) repairs to be made which I couldn't afford. (Now, the basement is) repaired to normal living conditions (and I have) piece of mind."
