Family Facing Problems From Flooded Basement

SPOKANE -- A South Hill family is financially devastated not once, but twice by a flooded basement. The problem is that they don't know what is causing the flooding.

The basement flooded two years ago when Spokane had that record breaking winter snowfall. Homeowner Jay Lake sealed the basement, but it flooded again. Now he is spending thousands of dollars more to solve the problem for good.

Jay is trying to figure out the source of the problem. A contractor is digging out the backyard all the way to the basement foundation. Then he will seal the exterior. The water comes off the hill and into the Jay's basement.

The family has lived in the 50 year old home for 12 years. It has only flooded twice. Both insurance claims have been denied. Homeowner's insurance does not cover ground water flooding and the house on south Lloyd is not in a flood zone. Between the two floods, the family will spend close to $30,000 for repairs.

"We can't go through this again. I mean we can't afford to fix these amounts. It's just horrendous so it's frustrating," said Lake.

Spokane County upgraded the road and storm drain system a few years ago in the Lake's neighborhood. County engineers said that should be helping drainage. They are scheduled to look at the Lake's home to see if that construction has anything to do with the flooding.
