Home Suffers Fire Damage

Fire damages a Madison County home Thursday morning.
It happened at a home in the 300 block of Flint Road in Madison County.

"My neighbor came knocking on my door to get us out," says homeowner, Jamie Wilson

Jamie Wilson has called this house on Flint road, in Waco, home for almost five years. But after building her first fire of the winter season, that home, was almost burned down.

"First thing, i have a little puppy, i grabbed him and grabbed the photo albums and birth certificates and baby books and out the door i went," admits Wilson

Wilson says she had two working smoke detectors inside her one-story home, but neither of them went off.

"We've never had a problem and i don't know if it was dirty or if maybe an animal got in there and nested a bird. so that's where it originated," explains Wilson

Wilson, who lives with her husband and three kids, says the fire started in the chimney. Then quickly spread to the back of the house.

"Luckily, we got the rest of our house and the interior was not harmed. So that is a blessing," adds Wilson

Wilson says this scare has taught her a valuable lesson.

"There will be no more chimney's and that learned my lesson. and, i'll never build another fire as long as i live, it's not worth the risk," explains Wilson

The Barnhill Chimney Company offers these tips for chimney safety.
Hire a certified chimney specialist ...sweep a chimney regularly ...inspect the chimney regularly ...and have a fire extinguisher nearby.
