New Resident's Basement Falls Victim To First Hard Rainfall

GRANITE FALLS -- Cleanup has begun for some neighbors along the South Fork Stillaguamish River.

Tim Horton, 34, was cleaning up his garage and basement Monday. He and his family in February moved into the two-story house just outside Granite Falls.

His backyard abuts the Stillaguamish River at 116th Place NE. His neighbors warned him about the approaching storm. He couldn't sleep Saturday night and by about 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, flood waters began rushing into his basement.

He moved some of his stuff upstairs and within an hour the water was ankle-deep.

“The second I touched that water it was ice cold, like pins and needles,” Horton said.

He began moving his family out of the house to higher ground. He carried his youngest kids and his two dogs. By the time they all got out, the water was waist-deep, he said.

The family returned home Sunday evening. The fast-moving water left behind a thick-coating of muck in backyard and created a mess in the lower-half of his house.

“Everybody's been real supportive so I think we'll bounce back,” Horton said.

Malinda Lulham has lived in the neighborhood since 2005. She was there when the flooding swept along the Stilly in 2006. The water ended up about a foot higher on her house that year than this weekend's flooding, she said.

“We're pretty prepared. You chose to live on the river and deal with it,” she said.
