The fire was reported shortly after 7:30 p.m. at 3605 Ross Ave. in Weston. At least three of the building’s five residents evacuated before firefighters arrived on scene, Meilahn said. No one was injured.
“When we came around the corner on Ross, I could see smoke blowing up against the sky on the corner
of the building,” Meilahn said.
The fire caused significant damage to one bedroom and smoke damage throughout the building, Meilahn said. The cause of the fire is not known, but is not considered suspicious, he said.
Everest Metro police officer Shane Thatcher said he arrived on the scene to find three residents and one
dog standing outside the building. The local chapter of the American Red Cross will coordinate living arrangements for the residents, Thatcher said.
A woman who lived in the apartment where the fire started said she noticed her two cats were acting
strange, Meilahn said. The woman discovered the fire when she went to investigate her cats’ behavior,
he said.
One of the woman’s two cats did not survive.
Joseph Hartill, one of the tenants, said he was not home when the fire started. “We were out to supper,” Hartill said, as he stood outside the apartment building waiting for information from officials.
Hartill said he arrived home at about 8 p.m. to find firetrucks outside his unit. He said he was relieved
to hear that his cat was rescued.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
