A fire caused significant damage as it swept through an eastside Erie home earlier this morning.
Firefighters arrived at 302 East Seventh St. after dispatchers received a call at 2:46 a.m.
Erie Bureau of Fire Deputy Chief Mike Balliett said they found heavy fire in the attic near the back of the house, which was vacant.
Crews were initially unable to get to the attic because the attic stairway had already collapsed.
"It took a while to get access to the attic," Balliett said.
Firefighters needed to cut into the second floor ceiling and use ladders to climb up to the attic. Crews with six companies had the fire under control by about 4:30 a.m., Balliett said.
Balliett said the blaze caused extensive damage to the second floor and attic. The first floor only had water damage.
Heat from the fire also burned the siding of an adjacent home on German Street.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
