Broken Fire Sprinkler Floods Bay City Hall Basement

BAY CITY — City officials were draining water from Bay City Hall's fire sprinkler system after a pipe burst today in a basement crawl space.

City firefighters were called to City Hall, 301 Washington Ave., about 2:40 p.m. when the building's fire alarm and smoke alarms went off. Fire Chief Greg Michalek said it was a false alarm.

However, while firefighter's were checking the building, a firefighter discovered the burst pipe and water in a crawl space on the southwest side of the building. Officials said the 1-inch pipe had burst and was leaking 10-15 gallons of water per minute.

It is unknown how long the water had been leaking out of the pipe, although city officials said they don't believe it was very long.

Water will be drained out of the sprinklers as a precaution and the company that installs the sprinklers will be called to investigate.

City Hall has been shut down since an Oct. 12 fire. Fire sprinklers in the attic caused considerable water damage throughout the building as they ran during the fire.
