The pipe leaked water onto the venue’s east concourse for 20 to 30 minutes before university officials arrived and turned the water off.
An alarm alerted officials to the problem.
They arrived to find a valve on the exterior pipe had frozen, and the water spilled onto the concourse and through a first-floor area that housed the stadium’s VIP lobby.
Ceiling tiles and carpet on that level sustained water damage. Water also filled an elevator shaft, causing electrical damage, according to an initial report of the incident.
“The upper east side of the concourse and the VIP area bore the brunt of it,” said Rob Rademacher, Michigan’s associate athletic director for facilities and operations.
Workers still need to check for water damage behind walls on the first floor before the full extent of the damage is known.
“We’re going to have to look in the lobby down below, take some panel and wood off, and see how wet it is behind there,” he said.
That process had not been scheduled.
Several events are scheduled for the Big House in January, but the pipe burst isn't expected to disrupt them.
