Garage Fire Causes Extensive Damage To Home

KENTWOOD--A fire that started Wednesday evening in an attached garage on Mesa Verde Court SE resulted from a space heater mixing with fumes from a nearby gas can, Fire Investigator Robert Peterson said Thursday.

Peterson said there is no reason to consider the fire suspicious. A string of garage arsons in Kentwood had residents on guard for much of September and October. Joseph Michael McIntyre, 23, was arrested Oct. 17 for his alleged involvement in as many as 10 fires throughout the late summer and early fall.

Referencing Wednesday’s fire, Peterson said a man living at 3243 Mesa Verde Ct. SE told fire investigators he had been working on a car on one side of his “two-stall” garage while a space heater was operating on the other side. The man escaped shortly after flames began to spread.

“He got out unscathed; he was a very lucky man,” Peterson said, noting the fire eventually spread to the man’s house.

He said a local branch of the Red Cross did arrive to assist the residents, who can no longer stay in the house due to damages.

Peterson urged homeowners to take caution when using alternate heating devices.

“The standard thing with space heaters is to make sure you have good ventilation in there,” he said. “Keep things away from it, especially fuel cans with vapors that can ignite.”
