Children's Home Flooded Because Copper Thieves Take Copper Pipes

COVINGTON, Ky. - The Children's Home of Northern Kentucky sustained thousands of dollars in damage Tuesday night after copper thieves broke into the building.
Staff members say an unknown number of vandals entered the home sometime overnight. The intruders ripped out several copper pipes that still had water running through them.
The facility's CEO, Diane Pipes, said the damage caused thousands of gallons of water to flood the entire basement.
The vandals also attempted to steal a TV and gaming system, but those items were later found severely damaged in the snow in the backyard of the property.
Pipes says it is heart-breaking news that could not have come at a worse time.
"Three days away from Christmas and we've incurred thousands of dollars in damage. We're a nonprofit agency…I can't believe someone would burglarize us and vandalized our property this way," said Pipes.
Wednesday evening, the water from the basement was cleared and the copper pipes were replaced.
