As of noon, water was gushing out of the broken, 30-centimetre pipe, flooding Neilson Road near McLevin Avenue.
Road closures are in effect on northbound Neilson, where the water is about 60 centimetres deep, to divert people away from the mess.
The water main break occurred near the east side of Malvern Town Centre. Water is pooling outside the mall but the complex and all its stores were still open during the lunch hour.
City crews have been called in to repair the break. The water has been shut off to that particular main.
