Overnight Fire Causes $20,000 In Damages To Wisconsin Home

MADISON, Wis. -- The Madison Fire Department is investigating the cause of a late night fire on the city's east side.

The five residents of the single-family home called 911 and evacuated the house after their smoke alarms went off just before midnight Monday.

When firefighters arrived at the home on the 200 block of South Fair Oaks Avenue they found smoke throughout the house. They traced the smoke to the basement where they discovered fire in the ceiling and charred floor joists, according to public information officer Lori Wirth.

Crews were able to put out the fire using a portable water extinguisher. Officials said damages could reach $20,000. The cause is still under investigation.
