Motel Fire Causes $25,000 In Damage

An Urbandale motel caught fire a bit after midnight Sunday, inflicting about $25,000 in damage in and around the first-floor room where the fire began but causing no serious injuries, fire officials said.

One occupant of Motel Relax, 7625 Hickman Road, was treated for minor smoke inhalation. "It certainly could have been a lot worse, especially considering it was a building with multiple people staying in it," said Urbandale Fire Marshal John Rech.

At 12:43 a.m. Sunday, dispatchers received several phone calls of heavy flames coming out the window of Room 127, on the first floor of the two-story motel. That room was rented out for the night, but the occupant was not inside when firefighters arrived. The fire spread to the two adjacent rooms, neither of which were rented out, and the intense heat damaged the railing and decking of a balcony.

Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze. They don't think it's suspicious, Rech said, but are following up with the occupant of the room where the fire began as well as with people who called 911to report the fire.

Most of the hotel residents affected were relocated to other rooms in the motel, although one was relocated by the Red Cross.

A person who answered the phone at Motel Relax declined to comment on Sunday.
