City Pays For Flooded Basement

In early July, Boulder resident Jane Fowler went into her basement to see why the water heater had stopped working.
"I hit the bottom step, and it was full" of water, Fowler said.
Unbeknownst to her, a city maintenance crew that was repairing Old Post Road following a break in a nearby water main several days earlier crushed the service line to Fowler's home in the 7200 block.
On Dec. 2, the Boulder City Council will be asked to authorize a payment of about $37,170 to contractors who replaced the floors, walls, furniture and family keepsakes that were destroyed when the backed-up line caused Fowler's finished basement to flood.
"I have an indoor driving range," Fowler said. "It was like a swimming pool."
The city of Boulder took responsibility for the damage, and immediately sent contractors to pump out and repair Fowler's basement. But officials have yet to pay those contractors for their work because the expenses must be approved by the council.
If the council approves the payment, the money will come from the city's "loss fund." If the council rejects the payment, the matter will likely head to court, according to city documents.
Fowler said she isn't upset with the city and is just glad to have her basement back to the way it was.
"I was very pleased with the way they handled this," Fowler said of the city.
