Broken Pipe Floods Mall

CHICO, Calif. -- Several of the downtown Chico businesses flooded earlier this week reopened today, but they won't be staying open long.

The Garden Walk Mall had been closed since a broken pipe caused a flood Monday morning.

The water has been cleaned up, but today business owners received more bad news. When damaged carpeting was removed cleanup crews discovered asbestos.

Now the mall will have to be re-closed while the asbestos is removed which could take more than a month.

But Olde Gold owner Steve Catterall is trying to keep things in perspective.

“I told somebody the other day that there's a whole world of people that would trade their troubles for mine,” said Catterall. “So as long as that the case I'll keep my troubles and do the best I can with them.”

Catterall says his business was insured and the store will survive.
