Burst Pipe Floods Apartment

A burst pipe forced almost 100 people from their apartment suites in the southwest on Wednesday afternoon.

The 15-storey building at Barberry Walk S.W. was evacuated when it began to fill with water around 3:00 p.m.

There is extensive damage reported to floors, walls, ceilings, and suite contents from the ninth floor to main level.

The cause of the flood was a broken pipe beneath a window left open in a mid-level suite.

A city bus was used to shelter the residents at the scene until most of them were allowed to return within a few hours.

Alberta Health Services also provided assistance, inspecting the affected areas.

The Calgary Fire Department's Brian McAsey adds that five suites suffered severe water damage and still need to be repaired before the tenants can return home.

Those people are being put up in a hotel courtesy of building management.
