Kansas City Fire Causes $75,000 of Damage

Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services offices in Kansas City, Kan., will be open Thursday following a fire there today, officials said.
The small fire set off the sprinkler system and caused water damage this morning at the SRS building at 402 State Avenue.
Firefighters responded to an automatic alarm at the offices at 402 State Avenue at about 7 a.m., they said, and found smoke in the building and the sprinkler system going off.
The system contained the fire to a janitorial supply room but sprinklers caused water damage to surrounding offices, they said. The total amount of damages to building and contents is estimated to be $75,000, they said.
SRS officials said they will be open Thursday but the public waiting area and some client interview rooms will be closed as they remove water and do other cleanup work.
Through the end of the week, they said, clients are encouraged to conduct their business by telephone if possible. Visitors should follow signs to the temporary business entrance, they said, and job coaching and group sessions are canceled until interview and conference rooms are available.
