Post Office Reopens, Then Closes Due To Water Damage

DENVER -- A post office on the 16th Street Mall in Denver closed for 10 months reopened on Wednesday, then suddenly closed permanently.

The post office has been in a basement level office space since 1994. Over the years, it's had problems with flooding, according to Al DeSarro, spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service western region.

DeSarro said the Postal Service worked with the landlord to get the water leakage problems fixed, but suddenly in January, there was a major flood that damaged equipment and forced the postal service to close the location.

The Postal Service looked at other locations, but they still had a lease on the 16th Street Mall location, DeSarro said.

"Over the summer, we got reassurances from the landlord they that were going to fix problems," said DeSarro. "So we decided to invest in new equipment and other improvements like redesigning the lobby and adding a self service postage unit."

The newly remodeled post office opened Wednesday, but within hours, there was a water leak right over the customer counter, DeSarro said.

The post office was closed.

"We can't continue to do this," DeSarro said. "It's not acceptable from a business standpoint."

The Postal Service has terminated its lease, effective Friday, said DeSarro.

DeSarro said the Postal Service is concerned about safety, the welfare of its customers and employees and possible damage to its customers' packages.

There are two post offices within one mile of the closed location. The locations are the downtown main branch at 20th and Curtis streets and the Mile High Station post office on 14th Avenue near the Denver Justice Center. An Office Depot on the 16th Street Mall also sells stamps and handles postal shipping.
