FOX POINT-- Three fires were set inside Cardinal Stritch's Claire Hall early on Thanksgiving morning. For the first time, we are seeing the extent of the damage.
The pictures taken after the fire was put out show damage to the walls, floor, and door of a second floor utility room in the center wing of Claire Hall.
Pictures taken inside a bathroom, where the second fire was set, show a charred wall and the ruined floor. You can also see the garbage cart where the suspect, Mauricio Pappiani, allegedly set another fire.
The damage was so bad that clean up continues, and 25 students still cannot get back into their dorm rooms. They are all staying on other floors in Clare Hall or are staying in a different residence hall.
"They're not on the second floor because it's uninhabitable. The repairs continue and will go on until after the Christmas break," Cardinal Stritch spokeswoman Joanne Williams said.
TODAY'S TMJ4 was told Pappiani is from Brazil, and attends Cardinal Stritch on a soccer scholarship. He admitted he set the fires, but told investigators he did not have a reason for doing it. He now faces several years behind bars, and faces losing his scholarship and getting kicked out of school when the university holds their own hearing separate from the criminal proceedings.
"There will be a process that will be followed, a hearing will be held, and his status will be determined at that hearing," Williams said.
"Is that common practice if anyone is accused of a crime who is a student?" reporter Heather Shannon asked.
"Yes," Williams replied.
Pappiani's passport was seized by court officials. His preliminary hearing is set for Wednesday, December 8th.
